Legislative committee explores clarification of state’s fire protection codes | Louisiana
SUMMARY: The House Committee on Fire Protection/Construction Code Task Force met to address inconsistencies in Louisiana‘s fire code for builders, affecting project approvals. Witnesses emphasized the need for the state fire marshal to have greater independence and authority. Currently, Louisiana follows both the International Fire Code and NFPA codes, which sometimes conflict. Stakeholders, including Michael Wich from the Home Builders Association, expressed support for Act 534, aiming for more efficient inspections. Expert Makayla D’Amore advocated for adopting local amendments similar to successful models in states like Florida and Georgia, emphasizing the importance of local officials in tailoring regulations.

New Orleans homicide drought ends over weekend | Louisiana
SUMMARY: New Orleans recorded its first homicide in almost three weeks on September 21, with 39-year-old Nolan Greathouse found dead from multiple gunshot wounds. This marks the only murder in the city since the beginning of the month, a rare occurrence reminiscent of hurricane-related lulls. Despite its historical reputation for high crime, New Orleans has experienced a significant drop in homicides, with 52 reported so far in 2023, compared to 194 in 2022. Overall, the city’s homicide rate remains high, but nationwide crime, including serious offenses, has decreased by 3% from 2022 to 2023, according to the FBI.

Hurricane Likely in the Gulf This Week
SUMMARY: Meteorologist P. Malone from WWL Louisiana reports on a potential tropical cyclone likely to strengthen into a hurricane in the Gulf. Expected to rapidly intensify, it could reach category 2 or 3 by Wednesday, with some models predicting category 4 before making landfall in Florida on Thursday. The projected path extends from Panama City to Tampa, prompting widespread preparation for a major hurricane. The system is turning north due to a weakening ridge and an approaching low-pressure trough. For updates, users can download the WWL app or stream on WWL Plus.
A developing storm will enter the Gulf of Mexico this week and likely head towards Florida. Meteorologist Payton Malone says concerns for Louisiana are low, but we’re keeping an eye on it.
