SUMMARY: A significant weather event is unfolding as a cold front moves southward, with tropical thunderstorms developing in the Caribbean. The National Hurricane Center predicts an 80% chance of this activity becoming a tropical cyclone, likely named Helene, which could become a tropical storm by Tuesday and a hurricane by Wednesday. The forecast suggests a path towards Panama City or further east. Central Alabama can expect temperatures around 90ยฐF, with isolated showers in the next few days. A cold front is projected to bring heavier storms and gusty winds by Thursday, potentially impacting high school football events, with rain totals of 1-4 inches expected.

Tracking Invest 97L, Impacts Likely Along the Gulf Coast Later This Week: 10pm Sunday Tropics
SUMMARY: Meteorologist Grant Skinner reports that a tropical system is likely to develop in the Caribbean and southern Gulf of Mexico this week, with potential impacts for the Gulf Coast. While other systems in the Atlantic pose no threat, the one being monitored (invest 97L) shows a medium chance of development within 48 hours. Organizing thunderstorms are forming over the Caribbean, and data from Air Force and NOAA flights will provide more information soon. Potential impacts could affect areas along the Alabama coastline and the Florida Panhandle, particularly around Appalachicola and Panama City. Updates will be provided as the situation evolves.
In the tropics we are tracking two areas. One of them is in the central tropical Atlantic and will likely develop over the next several days as it has a medium chance for formation. It does not pose a threat to the News 5 area. Another is in the northwestern Caribbean and in the southern Gulf. A broad area of low pressure has developed in part of the northwestern Caribbean and will move into the southern Gulf by the early/middle part of this week. It is still uncertain where exactly the more defined area low pressure will develop, how strong it will get, and the exact track. Once the center of circulation begins to develop, we will have a better idea of where this system will move. For now, make sure you have a tropical plan and stay updated with all the latest here on WKRG.
