A more focused look at Invest 97-L
SUMMARY: The National Hurricane Center has identified a system in the western Caribbean, designated as Invest 97L, with a high chance of developing over the next week. There’s a 50% likelihood it will become a named storm within two days. Current conditions show warm water temperatures conducive to strengthening, but high wind shear may hinder development. As the week progresses, forecasts indicate potential landfall near Apalachicola, Florida, with track models clustering east of the area. Changes in high-pressure patterns and interactions with a low-pressure system will influence the storm’s path, which remains uncertain. Updates will continue as the situation develops.
Meteorologist Devon Lucie starts off with the breaking news in the tropics with what’s now identified as Invest 97-L and forecast to move into the Gulf of Mexico through the week. He’ll show us where it’s initial forecast track is taking the system, what will influence the path, and how confident this forecast is right now.

Sunday 10 PM Tropical Update: Tropical development in Gulf expected this week
SUMMARY: Tropical developments in the Gulf of Mexico are being closely monitored, with an area designated as Invest 97 potentially forming into a tropical storm by Wednesday. Current models suggest a possible landfall in the Florida Panhandle around Thursday or early Friday, but forecasts remain uncertain as no storm center has formed yet. Meteorologists anticipate gaining more clarity in the next couple of days. Meanwhile, local weather remains calm with temperatures in the 70s and 80s, and hot conditions expected for tomorrow. Updates will be provided as the situation develops.
Tropical development in the Gulf of Mexico is very likely this week. As of Sunday evening, there is nothing to track yet because nothing has formed at this point. However, some showers and storms are firing up in the western Caribbean Sea, which will be the genesis of the eventual Gulf system later this week.
By midweek, a disturbance will enter the southern Gulf of Mexico. It could be a tropical storm or hurricane when it reaches the northern Gulf Coast late next week. Models indicate that the system will make landfall in the Florida panhandle sometime late this week. However, this is still not certain and can change. Be sure to stay tuned to the very latest on the forecast to find out more information on timing and impacts.
