One FL county confirms 2 cases of locally acquired dengue fever
SUMMARY: Pasco County has confirmed two local cases of dengue fever, particularly in the western area north of Ridge Road. Adrienne Rogers from the Pasco County Mosquito Control District emphasizes the importance of eliminating standing water, which can serve as breeding sites for the dengue-carrying mosquito. These mosquitoes prefer to live near humans and thrive in habitats created by human activities. The County is implementing a comprehensive response, as dengue can often be asymptomatic, though symptoms include fever, headaches, and rash. To protect against dengue, it’s vital to cover skin, use DEET insect repellent, and eliminate water-holding objects.
The Pasco County Mosquito Control District (PCMCD) reported the cases on Tuesday but advised the public that there is a heightened risk of more cases.

Jim DeFede Explores the politics of climate change on Facing South Florida
SUMMARY: During a recent hearing in South Florida, Senator Sheldon Whitehouse highlighted the impact of climate change, particularly on homeowners facing rising insurance rates and potential cancellations. He emphasized the role of fossil fuel emissions in driving climate change and the resulting unpredictable insurance market. Affected homeowners shared how increasing premiums force them to work additional jobs. Whitehouse noted that the partisan divide in addressing climate issues stems from the influence of fossil fuel money in politics, which undermines bipartisanship. He warned that without addressing root causes, adapting to climate-related calamities will be insufficient. Future actions depend on upcoming elections.
In a follow-up to last week‘s special edition of Facing, Jim talks to Senator Sheldon Whitehouse.

Tropics update: Depression likely next week in Gulf of Mexico
SUMMARY: Tropical development chances are increasing, particularly in the Gulf, where there’s a 70% likelihood of a system forming. Attention is also on waves off Africa with a 40% chance for development. The Gulf’s warm waters and low wind shear could facilitate rapid system formation. Forecast models show differing predictions: the GFS suggests early formation on Tuesday, potentially impacting Florida, while the Euro model forecasts later development on Wednesday, directing the system towards Louisiana. Residents should prepare hurricane emergency kits and stay weather aware as conditions may shift next weekend. Updates will continue from Fox 35.
The National Hurricane Center said a potential disturbance in the Caribbean Sea has a high chance (70%) of becoming a tropical depression next week as it nears the Gulf of Mexico.
