Op-Ed: Texas Legislature is setting taxpayers up for a big win, even in their offseason | Opinion
SUMMARY: Football season kicks off in Texas as the legislature works to enhance taxpayer benefits, focusing on Medicaid, which comprises over 40% of the state budget. A special Senate hearing is underway to address issues of waste, fraud, and abuse within the Health and Human Services Commission (HHS). Although Texas has not expanded Medicaid, enrollment issues and costs are escalating nationally, exacerbated by COVID-19 and federal policies. Governor Abbott’s administration aims to rectify program integrity issues, including removing ineligible recipients. The legislature must take action in the 2025 session to codify measures that prevent fraud, ensuring Medicaid serves those genuinely in need.

Ted Cruz, Colin Allred agree to a debate
SUMMARY: Senator Ted Cruz and Congressman Colin Allred are gearing up for a crucial televised debate in Dallas on October 15, as they campaign for the 2024 Senate seat. Cruz, a Republican seeking a third term, is facing challenges from Allred, a former NFL player and Democratic candidate. Both candidates have been attacking each other’s records, especially on issues like the economy and border security. Recent polls indicate Cruz leads by only single digits, partly attributed to the impact of Allred’s campaign. Allred aims to flip the Texas Senate seat, as no Democrat has won a statewide race in Texas for 30 years.
