Florida prepaid college tuition program providing refunds to parents | Florida
SUMMARY: Florida’s prepaid college tuition plan is providing refunds to parents due to strong investment earnings and low state tuition. Governor Ron DeSantis noted that these savings have helped keep college costs down, with rate rollbacks totaling $2.6 billion since 2020. About 40,000 families have yet to claim $130 million in refunds. The Florida Prepaid College Board manages a 529 plan that allows parents to invest tax-free for college expenses, with many investment plans generating double-digit returns. DeSantis emphasized Florida’s commitment to affordable higher education, while Chancellor Ray Rodrigues affirmed that Florida universities offer a strong return on investment.

Federal rate cuts expected to impact local housing market in the long run
SUMMARY: Last week, the Federal Reserve cut interest rates for the first time in four years, stirring discussions about its effects on the local housing market. Experts clarify that the Fed’s 50 basis point cut doesn’t directly lower mortgage rates, which are trending down, with current rates in the fives, improving buyer power. More buyers may enter the market, potentially increasing competition and home prices. Refinancing could save some homeowners money, though it isn’t for everyone. Economically, this shift can stimulate Florida’s housing market and encourage business growth. Experts recommend consulting financial professionals to explore potential savings.

Report: Florida is tops for education freedom | Florida
SUMMARY: Florida has ranked first in the Heritage Foundation’s Education Freedom Report Card for the third consecutive year, excelling in education choice, transparency, teacher freedom, and return on investment. Lawmakers enacted measures protecting parental and teacher rights and allowing parental review of classroom assignments. The state was recognized for its extensive school choice expansion through House Bill 1 and support for homeschooling autonomy. Florida ranked second in teacher freedom but could improve by limiting nonteaching staff growth. It finished eighth in return on investment, spending $12,108 per student while achieving average National Assessment of Educational Progress scores, suggesting areas for improvement.
