Sarah Boone appears in court with new lawyer ahead of murder trial
SUMMARY: In a recent court session regarding the case of Sarah Boon, defense attorney Mr. Owens discussed various motions, including a motion for a statement of particulars, additional discovery requests, and the appointment of mental health experts. The defense argued that the state’s filings were insufficiently detailed to prepare an adequate defense related to a battered spouse syndrome claim. The court evaluated the defense’s claims, the state’s response, and the unique circumstances of the case. Ultimately, the court denied some motions while granting the appointment of experts, also noting the importance of timely discovery in relation to the trial scheduled for October 7. The court emphasized the need for clarity around witness testimonies and relevant evidence regarding the defense strategy. Further hearings and motions may occur as the trial date approaches.

Doctor gets TMS approved for teens
SUMMARY: Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) is now FDA-cleared for teens aged 15 and older as a non-medicated depression treatment. Dr. Melissa Ficki, a child and adult psychiatrist, highlights TMS as a significant advancement, providing an alternative for youth suffering from mental health disorders. Unlike ECT, TMS is non-invasive and works by sending magnetic pulses to the brain regions involved in emotional regulation, helping to activate underactive neurons. This treatment aims to make mental health solutions more accessible, offering families another option besides medication and therapy. Experts hope to expand TMS approval for younger patients and additional mental health conditions in the future.
Dr. Melissa Fickey is a child and adult psychiatrist and founder of Embracing Life Wellness Center in Hillsborough County. She worked with a group to help get Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation, or TMS, cleared by the FDA for teens ages 15 and older.

Voters in The Villages focused on the border
SUMMARY: Voting for Florida’s general election begins in a month, and discussions reveal voters’ key concerns. Our initiative, “Voice of the Voter,” has traveled across the state, highlighting perspectives in areas like The Villages, a large retirement community. Common issues include the economy and border control, with many expressing frustration over political honesty. Notably, Kamala Harris is reportedly performing better among seniors than Donald Trump, despite Democrats traditionally struggling with this demographic. Many voters, both older and younger, are shifting towards “No Party Affiliation” to escape polarized politics, indicating a potentially changing political landscape ahead of November.
Capitol reporter Forrest Saunders talks to voters in the Villages to get their view of what is important in the coming election in our Voice of the Voter series.
