Federal Reserve Cutting Interest Rates | September 18, 2024 | News 19 at 10 p.m.
SUMMARY: A student has been charged with making a terrorist threat. In notable economic news, the Federal Reserve has lowered interest rates by half a percentage point for the first time in four years. This decision could provide financial relief for citizens in North Alabama, although the benefits may take time to materialize. The rate cut aims to sustain economic strength and support progress on inflation, which has dropped from 9.1% in 2022 to 2.5%. Credit card users may experience immediate relief, while mortgage rates are also expected to decrease. The Fed will closely monitor inflation and unemployment in the coming months.
Americans could be finding more money in their pockets following the Federal Reserve’s announcement of lowering interest rates Wednesday.

Red Couch: Fall Mums Tips
SUMMARY: As fall approaches, Bellingrath Gardens is highlighting the care of mums, which thrive in Mobile. To successfully grow mums, plant them in a location that receives at least six hours of sunlight daily and water them in the morning to prevent root rot. Pinch back the plants mid-summer for a bushy appearance, and deadhead spent flowers as needed. Use a balanced fertilizer, like Miracle Grow, but reduce application as flowers bloom. Mums may be affected by pests like aphids and mealybugs, which can be treated with insecticidal soap. Visit Bellingrath Gardens for more tips and seasonal displays during the upcoming Great Bellingrath Harvest.
WKRG News 5’s Bill Riales and Shamonee Baker talk fall plant tips with Bellingrath Gardens.
