James Agee's lasting tribute to his father
SUMMARY: The musical “Knoxville,” currently at the Clarence Brown Theater, is an adaptation of James Agee’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel “A Death in the Family.” Born in Knoxville, Agee’s life greatly influenced his work, shaped by the tragic loss of his father in a car accident when Agee was just six. The musical revisits themes of death and memory while celebrating Knoxville’s landmarks. Agee, a multifaceted talent as a novelist, journalist, poet, and screenwriter, left a lasting legacy, including a street and park named after him. “Knoxville” runs through Sunday, complementing the exploration of Agee’s profound connections to East Tennessee.
