SUMMARY: Tropical storm Gordon is moving west in the Atlantic but does not threaten the Gulf Coast. Another non-tropical low near Georgia may develop subtropical characteristics, posing a medium chance for heavy rain and gusty winds along the East Coast. The remnants of tropical storm Francine will bring isolated flash flooding risks to parts of the region, especially northern areas. Tomorrow, a 40% chance of showers and storms is expected, leading to cooler temperatures in the mid-80s. Rain chances will persist into early next week before drier air arrives, raising temperatures again toward the week’s end.

Isolated showers will be possible into this evening, and brief showers will be possible overnight. Lows will sit at around 70 degrees with partly cloudy skies. Sunday will stay with morning isolated showers, and they will become a bit more scattered into the afternoon and evening. Thanks to extra clouds and shower chances, highs will only reach into the mid-80’s for most spots. This is thanks to an area of low pressure that was Francine and an associated boundary diving south closer to the News 5 area. They will bring higher rain chances for Monday and more scattered showers and a few brief storms for Tuesday as well. Rain chances will slowly drop late Tuesday and into Thursday as the front moves offshore. Highs will sit in the low- to mid-80’s through Wednesday before warming back to more seasonable temperatures by the weekend. In the tropics, we continue to track Gordon and one other area. Gordon is a tropical storm and is several hundred miles east of the Windward and Leeward Islands. It will see fluctuations in strength and will eventually move north. It does not pose a threat to our area. The other area to watch is off the coast of GA and the Carolinas. It could form subtropical characteristics or become a depression before pushing inland, but regardless it will bring windy conditions to that area as well as rough surf and downpours. It also does not pose a threat.

SUMMARY: As temperatures drop in the Tennessee Valley, many are experiencing issues with their heating systems, prompting concerns about burning smells. This is often due to dust buildup, which is typically harmless if it dissipates within 5 to 10 minutes. To avoid heating problems, experts recommend scheduling a system tune-up and ensuring that all entrances have proper weather stripping to prevent heat loss. Regularly replacing air filters also helps maintain the system’s efficiency. For energy savings, the U.S. Department of Energy suggests setting thermostats as low as comfortably possible.

With the drop in temperatures, comes an increase in the number of people cranking up the heat for the first time since last winter.
