Seasonable Saturday with A Few Showers, More Showers Sunday: Saturday Morning Forecast 9/14/2024
SUMMARY: Meteorologist Grant Skinner from the Storm Team discusses the tropics, noting Tropical Storm Gordon poses no threat to the U.S. as it meanders in the Atlantic. Another area near Georgia and the Carolinas has a medium chance of development, potentially bringing rain and gusty winds to the East Coast. There’s notable fog in the area due to humidity and calm winds, leading to a caution for drivers. Rain chances will increase from Sunday through Tuesday with a risk of isolated flash flooding in northern areas. Temperatures are expected to be in the upper 80s to low 90s today, cooling slightly next week.
We start this morning with partly cloudy skies and mild temperatures at around 70 degrees. The morning should be quiet, and we will gradually warm to around 90 degrees by the afternoon. Isolated showers and a couple of storms are possible during the afternoon and evening thanks to an area of low pressure to our north and west that was Francine. The majority of the showers and storms will be in the northern and central portions of Alabama. As this low moves south into Sunday, a few more storms are possible, but they will still be hit or miss. Highs will sit in the mid-80’s. Isolated storm chances continue through Tuesday as the low and an associated front slowly dive south. Once they both move offshore by the middle of the week, we will have drier conditions across the area. Highs will sit in the mid-80’s through the middle of the week before warming up next weekend. In the tropics, we continue to track Gordon and one other area. Gordon is a tropical storm and is several hundred miles east of the Windward and Leeward Islands. It will see fluctuations in strength and will eventually move north. It does not pose a threat to our area. The other area to watch is off the coast of GA and the Carolinas. It could form subtropical characteristics or become a depression before pushing inland, but regardless it will bring windy conditions to that area as well as rough surf and downpours. It also does not pose a threat.

How to Get Your Home Ready for the Winter | Nov. 21, 2024 | News 19 at 6 p.m.
SUMMARY: As temperatures drop in the Tennessee Valley, many are experiencing issues with their heating systems, prompting concerns about burning smells. This is often due to dust buildup, which is typically harmless if it dissipates within 5 to 10 minutes. To avoid heating problems, experts recommend scheduling a system tune-up and ensuring that all entrances have proper weather stripping to prevent heat loss. Regularly replacing air filters also helps maintain the system’s efficiency. For energy savings, the U.S. Department of Energy suggests setting thermostats as low as comfortably possible.
With the drop in temperatures, comes an increase in the number of people cranking up the heat for the first time since last winter.

Hush Lounge set to close months after mass shooting
SUMMARY: Following a mass shooting in the Five Points South District that left four dead and 17 injured on September 21, restaurant sales plummeted by 80% for some. However, business owner Ace Graham noted improvements in sales two months later, coinciding with seasonal changes and increased community spending. Despite this positive trend, the nearby Hush Lounge has announced its closure, reflecting the ongoing challenges for small businesses in the area. Graham remains optimistic, believing that community events, like the upcoming Saint Patrick’s Day parade, will help rejuvenate the entertainment district and foster local growth.
