Tropical Storm Francine pushes into Mississippi: What to expect

SUMMARY: Heavy rainfall is causing flooding in Louisiana and Mississippi as Tropical Storm Francine approaches. Rainfall totals in the region, especially from Houma to Covington, may reach up to nine inches. The worst weather is currently affecting the Pine Belt, including Hattiesburg and southern Rankin County. Winds are beginning to pick up in southern Mississippi, and tropical storm warnings are in effect for coastal areas in Louisiana and Alabama. Although severe weather is possible, dry air is limiting the threats. Francine is expected to move inland towards Jackson around 7 a.m. today, with improving conditions anticipated in the afternoon.

Francine has weakened to a tropical storm as it churns northward to Mississippi. The storm made landfall as a Category 2 hurricane around at 5 p.m. Wednesday in Terrebonne Parish, Louisiana, about 30 miles southwest of Morgan City.

Federal funding to help Lamar, Perry counties bolster law enforcement staffs
