Dallas Skillman Library saved from closure after councilwoman finds untapped funds
SUMMARY: The Skilman Library in Dallas, initially proposed for closure due to low attendance, has been spared after strong community opposition. Residents expressed their concerns to city council members, emphasizing the library’s value. The library director explained lower attendance stemmed from the lack of specific programs offered at Skilman, which are available at other branches. Councilwoman Paula Blackman found $485,000 from an infrastructure fund to keep the library open. While some hesitated to use these funds, council support was evident, and the proposal to save the library has passed a preliminary vote, pending formal approval in the city budget.
Ultimately, the proposal to save the library passed in a straw vote. However, it still needs formal approval from the council in the city’s budget. But for now, it looks like the Skillman branch has been spared.

Texas lawmaker makes push to remove death penalty in the state | FOX 7 Austin
SUMMARY: Williamson County Representative John Bucy advocates for abolishing the death penalty in Texas, citing both financial and moral concerns. He has filed a bill to end executions, arguing that it costs more to execute someone than to imprison them. This follows a Texas Supreme Court decision to move forward with Robert Robertson’s execution, despite claims of his innocence based on updated science. Since 1982, Texas has executed nearly 600 people, the most in the U.S. While death sentences have declined in recent years, Bucy believes growing public awareness of wrongful convictions may change attitudes toward the death penalty.
A Central Texas lawmaker is making a push to get the state to abolish the death penalty.
