Thousands once gathered for funeral of East Tennessee man who was still alive
SUMMARY: Felix Bush, a 74-year-old farmer from Ran County, Tennessee, wanted to hear people’s opinions about him before he passed away. In a unique idea, he arranged his own funeral, which garnered significant media attention. On June 26, 1938, approximately 8,000 attendees from four states attended what the Knoxville Journal dubbed a “live corpse” event, where Bush sat by his homemade casket and listened to tributes. He passed away on February 9, 1943, but his actual funeral drew only six attendees, a stark contrast to his previous event five years earlier.
Felix “Bush” Breazeale wanted to know what people would say about him at his funeral, so he had one before he died.

Newport businesses struggling after Helene
SUMMARY: After Hurricane Helene, Newport businesses are still struggling to recover. Many had to close for weeks due to flooding, with 2 to 3 feet of water damaging their stores. Though they have reopened, customer traffic is down by 20-40%, as rerouted roads discourage visits. Business owners express gratitude for community support but emphasize the need for more customers, especially through the holiday season. They urge locals to continue supporting small businesses to ensure the town’s survival. With limited access to I-40 and fewer visitors, these businesses face a challenging winter ahead.
With fewer North Carolina customers, they are relying on East Tennesseans to help them through the holiday season.
