55% of state’s West Nile Virus mosquitoes have come from the Coast
SUMMARY: The Mississippi Department of Health reports a surge in West Nile Virus, with 117 mosquitoes testing positive in the state, including three human cases. Harrison County accounts for nearly half of these samples, prompting increased mosquito control efforts. Director Jean Fard notes that the current mosquito season is unusually active, likely due to recent rainy weather after a drought. Local crews are spraying areas multiple times per week to eliminate larvae. Residents are urged to assist by removing standing water from their yards, such as cleaning gutters and dumping water from toys, to help control mosquito populations.
117 mosquitoes found in Mississippi have tested positive for West Nile Virus this year, according to the Mississippi Department of Health (MSDH).
