SUMMARY: August is National Breastfeeding Awareness Month, highlighting the benefits of maternal nutrition for both mothers and infants. Breastfeeding reduces risks of allergies, asthma, and hospitalizations in well babies, according to Dr. Misty Verman, a neonatologist at UAMS. Despite its advantages, breastfeeding presents challenges, including clogged ducts and mastitis. Many mothers face difficulties finding supportive environments for breastfeeding, with some being forced to pump in restrooms. Personal experiences, like those of Alice and Clark, reveal the emotional toll of these challenges. This month also coincides with National Black Breastfeeding Week, promoting support and resources for breastfeeding mothers.

August is National Breastfeeding Awareness Month and Arkansas health officials are discussing why it’s such an important time for both moms and babies.
