Future of baseball in Tampa Bay
SUMMARY: The Rays’ efforts to secure a new stadium in St. Petersburg have hit a major setback. The proposed deal is now likely dead after delays and political opposition from local officials, including Pinellas County Commissioners and the St. Pete City Council. Rays co-president Brian Auld criticized the delays and lack of support, particularly from new commissioners who oppose the funding. St. Pete Mayor Ken Welch pledged not to ask taxpayers for more money and vowed to meet with the Rays to explore alternatives. Meanwhile, the possibility of the Rays never returning to Tropicana Field remains, with repairs deemed uncertain and costly.
This week the bluntness of baseball business became all too clear when the Rays suspended their deal and the county delayed funding to build a new stadium. ABC Action News reporter Erik Waxler reports on what we learned this week and where the ball may drop next.
