Armyworms move in to wreak havoc on yards
SUMMARY: Fall armyworms, small caterpillars that wreak havoc on grasses, including wheat and turf, are experiencing an especially high population this summer, unlike the usual cycle of every two to three years. Jeff Hays from Lowndes Farm Supply attributes this increase to favorable weather conditions, like significant rainfall and fertilizer use, creating lush grass ideal for feeding. To combat the infestation, Hays advises farmers to monitor their fields for signs of armyworms, including bird activity and yellow patches in the grass. The armyworm life span is typically between 10 to 21 days, emphasizing the need for proactive measures.
