Couple survives 36 hours at sea after current carries them while scuba diving near Matagorda
SUMMARY: Kim and Nathan Maker, a couple on their honeymoon in Mexico, encountered a harrowing experience while scuba diving off the coast of Matagorda. Strong currents swept them away from their group, leading to nearly 36 hours adrift in the Gulf of Mexico. As they awaited rescue, the couple faced fears of survival, even contemplating difficult decisions about their fates. Fortunately, the Coast Guard spotted them just in time and rescued them, bringing them to safety. The couple, badly sunburnt but alive, expressed gratitude for the Coast Guard’s efforts, highlighting their heroism during their ordeal.
A couple from Oklahoma survived two nights and nearly two days bobbing in the Gulf of Mexico last week.
Kim and Nathan Maker were part of a group scuba diving old offshore oil platforms roughly 15 miles off the coast of Matagorda.
On Wednesday, while trying to help another diver get back to a rope they could hold on to, Nathan was whisked away by the current.
His wife tried to reach out and grab his hand while he fought the current.

Texas teacher accused of breaking child's fingers was arrested | FOX 7 Austin
SUMMARY: McKenzie Merill, a teacher from Fluger ISD, faces a first-degree felony charge for allegedly breaking the fingers of a 5-year-old autistic boy. Surveillance footage showed Merill holding the child’s hand, and after the boy returned home acting strangely, a doctor confirmed fractures in his ring and little fingers. Merill claimed she used pressure as a de-escalation technique and did not recall the child’s injury, later asserting self-defense, which the boy’s parents found outrageous. Following the incident, Merill was placed on administrative leave and is no longer employed by the district, which is also reviewing disciplinary actions for another employee.
The Pflugerville ISD teacher accused of breaking a kindergartner’s fingers was arrested on Wednesday.
