News from the South - Kentucky News Feed
Morning weather forecast: 8/2/2024
SUMMARY: A stunning rainbow captured by Mary Baker followed storms across Central and Eastern Kentucky. As of this morning, storms are approaching Lexington, with some rain affecting Anderson and Franklin Counties. Gusty winds are anticipated but no severe weather is currently reported. The front is still to the west, and isolated showers may linger tomorrow. Today‘s scattered storms could be strong, with a level one risk for damaging winds and flooding due to saturated ground. A heat dome is expected next week, potentially influenced by a tropical system affecting Florida, which might bring a cool down afterward.
It’s almost over folks! Mother Nature has been throwing all of her punches at Kentucky, and the end is on the horizon. Heat will settle back in and the stormy pattern will dissipate beginning this weekend.

Advocates against gun violence host symposium in Lexington
SUMMARY: Reports indicate that Lexington experienced fewer shootings and homicides in 2024 compared to the previous year, but community leaders recognize the need for ongoing efforts. At the Symposium on Youth and Young Adult Gun Violence, participants discussed addressing root causes rather than merely treating symptoms. The focus was on understanding the social issues contributing to gun violence, such as lack of housing, food security, and employment. Approximately 100 community members, including leaders from various organizations, collaborated to share resources and strategies. The collective effort aims to create sustainable change to combat gun violence effectively.
For the second year, One Lexington hosted the Symposium on youth and young adult gun violence, with this year’s theme “addressing the sickness, not the symptoms.”
