Starkville Fire sends out safety tips, demonstrates how to use fire extinguisher
SUMMARY: Starkville firefighters have recently responded to seven cooking fires, highlighting that cooking is the leading cause of house fires. Fire Marshal Mark McCarty emphasizes the importance of fire safety, especially with grease fires, which are classified as Class B fires. Using water on these fires can exacerbate the situation, spreading flames instead of extinguishing them. Instead, he recommends using an ABC fire extinguisher, demonstrating the effective “PASS” technique: Pull the pin, Aim the nozzle, Squeeze the trigger, and Sweep at the base of the fire. Additionally, having smoke detectors can alert families to danger, potentially saving lives.
After responding to at least seven residential fires in last few weeks, the Starkville Fire Department taking preemptive actions.
