Monday 12 PM Tropical Update: Tropical development is possible

SUMMARY: The National Hurricane Center has identified a cluster of clouds in the Atlantic with a 50% chance of development as it approaches the Bahamas later this week. The European model indicates potential development and movement toward the U.S. East Coast, while the GFS model suggests minimal development and only some rainfall for Florida and Cuba. Saharan dust and dry air may hinder strengthening. Locally, the forecast expects high temperatures around 94-95°F, with heat indices reaching near 110°F, prompting possible heat advisories. Higher rain chances may arise as a ridge of high pressure shifts westward this weekend.

The National Hurricane Center is highlighting a medium chance for tropical development in the next seven days. Right now there is almost nothing visible to track, but models show a low-pressure area could start to organize some as it moves from the western Atlantic Ocean to somewhere roughly around the northern Caribbean or Bahamas in the first couple of days of August.

Long-range models differ on the eventual outcome. The European model shows it will develop somewhere near the Bahamas next weekend and curve around high pressure in the Atlantic. This could take it just east of the US East Coast. The American model does not show much organization at all and just has messy moisture drifting into the Caribbean next weekend. There will be some dry, dusty air which could limit development.

This is just an early look. It’s too early to say how organized it will get or exactly where it could end up.

We’ll continue to watch closely through this upcoming week. Right now, there are no threats for our part of the Gulf Coast through the next seven days.

SUMMARY: Bear County law enforcement agencies express concern over a new booking policy by Sheriff Javier Salazar, which delays jail intake for suspects requiring medical screening. The directive, aimed at addressing jail deaths, mandates that suspects detoxing from substances or with serious medical conditions must be evaluated at a hospital before booking. This has led to significant delays and complications for officers, with reports of suspects being released instead of booked. Smaller agencies worry that the policy jeopardizes public safety. Despite the concerns raised, Sheriff Salazar maintains that the policy is necessary to improve health outcomes for detainees.

Several area law enforcement agencies said a new directive from Bexar County Sheriff Javier Salazar puts public safety at risk.
