GRITS Summer Camp students learn STEM skills integral to coastal conversation

SUMMARY: Mississippi Extension’s summer camp, GRITS (Green and Resilient Technical Skills), introduces aged 16 to 18 to STEM careers focused on coastal conservation. Participants hands-on , drone operation, boating safety, and elevation survey techniques, culminating in a shoreline restoration project. This experience helps students, particularly those interested in marine biology and environmental science, explore various career avenues. One recent camper secured a job at the USM aquaculture lab thanks to skills gained at camp. Upon completion, attendees receive certificates to enhance their resumes and further their educational and vocational pursuits.

From drones taking to the sky to boats the along Chemours in the Pass, students attending MSU Extension Center’s GRITS Summer Camp are hands-on.
