SUMMARY: Childcare providers are facing financial difficulties due to delays in subsidy payments, exacerbated by a software transition at the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education. This transition has caused communication issues, leading to slow processing of subsidy claims, with providers owed substantial amountsโ€”one reported $17,000. Families already qualified for care cannot secure spaces, impacting availability due to half-capacity operations. While the state is offering additional American Rescue Plan funds to , providers argue it’s insufficient to their losses, prompting calls for consistent monthly payments from the state to stabilize their finances amid ongoing difficulties.

Lisa Scheer at Baden Christian Child Care Center says most of the families they serve need help paying for child care. Their tuition is supposed to be paid for through state subsidies.ย
