Outdoor Adventures with Chelsea: Finding fossils in creeks
SUMMARY: Mississippi’s rich history extends millions of years, evidenced by fossils found in local creeks. This week, Outdoor Adventures with Chelsea explores a creek off Highway 45 in Prentiss County, famous for its shark teeth and fossils, indicating the region was once covered by sea. Fossil hunters should wear gloves due to potential hazards such as glass and sharp shark teeth. George Phillips, paleontology curator at the Mississippi Museum of Natural Science, urges adventurers to go with experienced friends due to creek hazards. His favorite discovery was a dinosaur tooth near the Hell Creek Wildlife Management Area. Always respect local wildlife, including venomous snakes.
In many local creeks, you can find different fossils, including prehistoric shark teeth.
