Mississippi State veterinarians save life of endangered sea turtle named ‘Toast Malone’
SUMMARY: Veterinarians at Mississippi State University successfully performed life-saving procedures on two endangered sea turtles, Toast Malone and Mudpie. Toast Malone, a Kemp’s ridley sea turtle, had a fishhook removed from its stomach by Dr. John Thomason using endoscopy. Mudpie, a loggerhead sea turtle, had two fishhooks removed from its esophagus and mouth by Thomason, CVM faculty, and veterinary students. These efforts are part of the university-based Global Center for Aquatic Health and Food Security’s collaboration with the Institute for Marine Mammal Studies. Both turtles are now recovering at the Mississippi Gulf Coast with hopes of being released back into the wild.
