Mississippi must work quickly to redraw legislative districts
SUMMARY: Voting rights attorneys urge Mississippi to swiftly redraw some legislative districts to ensure equal representation for Black residents. They filed papers requesting special elections in updated districts this November. On July 2nd, three federal judges mandated the redrawing of certain State House and Senate districts, citing weakened Black voting power in current districts. The judges seek the new districts before the legislative session in January. However, attorneys for state election commissioners argue that it’s impossible to establish new districts in time for November’s elections.
Attorneys said Mississippi needs to work quickly to redraw legislative districts.
