Some drivers register 'citation frustration' with Hattiesburg school-zone speeding program
SUMMARY: Hattiesburg’s new radar camera pilot program has caused confusion and frustration, as people received speeding citations without proof of who was driving. Local lawyer and judge Reginal Black highlighted this issue, noting that he got a ticket for a vehicle he wasn’t driving. Pine Belt Attorney Di Carlo Hood offered to represent affected individuals for free. The program, using handheld radar detectors and cameras, cited 841 drivers in its first month, each facing a $230 fee if they don’t contest. Despite state law prohibiting automated camera speeding tickets, the city claims compliance by having an officer present. The initiative aims to enhance school zone safety and could financially benefit both the city and the technology company, Intellisafe. The city’s mayor insists the program is legally sound and prioritizes safety.
