Carly Gregg to stand trial in mother's murder
SUMMARY: Jury selection begins Monday in the trial of 15-year-old Carly Gregg, accused of killing her mother, Ashley Smylie, and shooting her stepfather in March. Smylie was a teacher at Northwest Rankin High School. Gregg has made multiple court appearances, including rejecting a plea deal in August. A gag order prevents attorneys from discussing the case with the media. During a motion hearing, a diary belonging to Smylie was revealed, which may be used as defense evidence. Gregg, receiving psychological help, was reportedly on changed medication before the incident. If convicted, she faces 20 years to life in prison.
