West Point neighborhood festival takes home state award
SUMMARY: The Cottrell Street Music and Heritage Festival in West Point, Mississippi, recently won the Outstanding New Small Event Under 5,000 at the Mississippi Main Street Awards, bringing renewed attention to a neighborhood that has been revitalizing over the past three years. Historically a bustling hub for the black community from the 1940s to the 1980s, the area declined due to drugs and crime. Mayor Rod Bobo aims to honor its significance as the center of African-American business. Eleven Main Streets from various areas, including Aberdeen and Tupelo, also received awards. Daylight saving time: Does Mississippi want to stop changing the clocks?
SUMMARY: Daylight saving time (DST) ends on November 3, with many hoping it could be the last clock change. Despite numerous state and federal efforts to eliminate the biannual shift, progress has stalled. Many states seek to adopt permanent DST and have passed various resolutions, although they require congressional approval. States such as Florida, Georgia, and South Carolina are among those pushing for year-round DST, while others like Idaho propose permanent standard time contingent on neighboring states’ actions. Recent legislative attempts have largely failed, with most states still set to adjust their clocks unless Congress intervenes.
