Heirs of Godbolt victim receive millions in wrongful death lawsuit
SUMMARY: In Lincoln County, Mississippi, the family members of Sheila Burage, a woman killed in 2017 by Willie Cory Godbolt, were awarded millions in a wrongful death lawsuit. In June 2024, the judge awarded $1 million in compensatory damages to each of Burage’s heirs and $15 million total in punitive damages. Godbolt was convicted in 2020 for the 2017 killings of eight people, including Burage, receiving life sentences for each murder and the death penalty for capital murder convictions. The Mississippi Supreme Court affirmed his convictions and declined to rehear his appeal in 2024.

SUMMARY: On October 5, a two-vehicle crash in Jones County, Mississippi, resulted in three injuries. The accident occurred around 5:15 p.m. near the 3700 block of Sharon Road, involving a Chevrolet sedan and a Toyota sedan. Firefighters found the Chevy blocking the road and had to use hydraulic equipment to free its driver, who sustained serious injuries; two others had minor to moderate injuries. Witnesses reported that one vehicle drifted into oncoming traffic, leading to an offset head-on collision. Authorities from the Jones County sheriff’s office and Mississippi Highway Patrol also responded to the scene.
