Hosemann set to tackle school absentee rate
SUMMARY: The state absenteeism rate has reached an alarming 24%, prompting lawmakers to address this issue, including considering cell phone restrictions in schools. In the Rankin County School District, absenteeism is at 13%, attributed to proactive parental communication. Lieutenant Governor Delbert Hosemann suggests moving attendance officers to individual districts and raising their salaries from the current average of $24,000. Ebony Rice, President of the Jackson Federation of Teachers, supports the focus on absenteeism. Hosemann also emphasizes the need to restrict cell phone use in schools, citing their impact on student attention and education, particularly between grades 3 and 8.
