Skilled to Work: Energizing the Electrical Trade

Jeff Franks, Electrical Technology Program Director at ICC, aims to develop a steady stream of skilled workers to meet high demand. Students in the program can work in manufacturing, residential construction, and various environments across the U.S., earning while they learn. The median pay for electricians is over $60,000, with Mississippi requiring a license for the profession. This initiative ensures a continuous supply of proficient electricians, emphasizing safety and expertise.

SUMMARY: The Department of Public Safety (DPS) is planning to move from its current building on Woodrow Wilson, which has severe foundation issues, asbestos problems, and gas leaks, to a new site in Pearl. The existing headquarters, built in 1976, needs to be demolished, and the land may be sold for redevelopment. The new DPS site will consolidate all divisions under one roof for the first time, with costs now between $65 and $70 million. The timeline for the new building's completion has shifted to late summer or early fall of 2025. The state is considering commercial development for the vacated site.

SUMMARY: Law enforcement in Port Gibson, Mississippi, are intensively searching for two dangerous inmates, 24-year-old Tyrekennel Collins and 18-year-old Dezarrious Johnson, who escaped from Claiborne County Detention Center early Friday morning by breaking through the ceiling. Johnson, who is injured and walking with a limp, was recently spotted, prompting an active manhunt. Multiple agencies, including the Mississippi Highway Patrol and U.S. Marshals, are involved. Both inmates are charged with murder and considered highly dangerous. Authorities are urging the public to remain vigilant, stressing the importance of capturing the escapees quickly to ensure community safety.

A popular attraction visited the National Park in Vicksburg: Douglas Baum and his family's camels, sharing the story of ‘Old Douglas,' the only camel to die in the Civil War. July 4th marked the siege of Vicksburg's end, where ‘Old Douglas' served the 43rd Mississippi Infantry by carrying their regimental band. The reenactment aims to engage young people in history. Portraying ‘Old Douglas' are 12-year-old Jadid and 15-month-old Saubr, appearing at the Vicksburg National Military Park on Saturday and Sunday at 9 a.m.
