Middleton Attendance Center historic marker
SUMMARY: On Friday, Lindsay Hall reported the unveiling of a historical marker at Northeast Middle School to commemorate Middleton Attendance Center. Built in 1959, Middleton accommodated black students in Lauderdale County outside the Meridian Separate School District, housing 59 faculty members and around 2,000 students from grades 1-12. It remained operational until 1970, when desegregation led black students to be reassigned to predominantly white schools. The event holds significance for alumni, affirming their school's historical presence. Middleton was later converted into Northeast Lauderdale Elementary School. This marker is a significant addition, celebrating the school's crucial role in local history.

Tips to keep you safe when using fireworks
SUMMARY: Last year, nearly 10,000 people were sent to the emergency room, and eight died due to firework injuries on July 4th, according to the US Consumer Product Safety Commission. Fireworks can also start fires if not used or disposed of correctly. Always read instructions and be prepared for any situation. Planning ahead can help you react more efficiently in emergencies. A critical aspect of firework safety is having a water source available, such as a hose, bucket, or fire extinguisher, to put out fires. Additionally, wearing eye protection is recommended when handling fireworks.
