Mississippi’s first LGBTQ shelter opening in Jackson
SUMMARY: The Jack Myers House, Mississippi's first LGBTQ+ domestic shelter, has opened in Jackson, marking the culmination of a decade of planning. Executive Director of the Mississippi Harm Reduction Initiative, Jason McCarty, highlighted the community's effort in realizing this project. Inspired by Jack Myers, a Pelahatchie native who began providing resources in the 1970s, the shelter is named in his honor. The shelter will support residents for up to 90 days with services like job placement, resumé building, recovery programs, and support groups for domestic violence survivors. The grand opening is scheduled for July.
