New Freedom Trail marker unveiled honoring civil rights icons Dorie and Dr. Joyce Ladner
SUMMARY: The Mississippi Freedom Trail has unveiled a new marker honoring civil rights leaders Dorie and Dr. Joyce Ladner in Hattiesburg. The marker, located at 507 Mobile Street, highlights the Ladner sisters' contributions to the civil rights movement, alongside other important sites like the African American Military History Museum. The Ladners, inspired by Emmett Till's murder, were active in the NAACP Youth Council, the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee, and participated in Freedom Rides and marches. Law enforcement will not immediately issue citations for ‘squatted’ vehicles in Mississippi
SUMMARY: Mississippi has enacted a new law banning “squatted” vehicles, where the front bumper is raised four or more inches above the rear fender, effective from Monday. Law enforcement will issue warning citations until January 27, 2025, before imposing fines of $100, $200, and $300 for subsequent offenses, with a third offense resulting in a one-year license suspension. The fines will support secondary school driver's education. Gov. Tate Reeves signed House Bill 349, authored by Rep. Fred Shanks, following a fatal accident involving a squatted truck. Mississippi joins North Carolina, South Carolina, and Virginia in this prohibition.

Investigators found explicit recordings and messages on Hall's phone. Despite his apology to the victims' families, Judge Christopher Schmidt handed down the lengthy sentence, ensuring Hall will serve the full term without parole.
