What to know about COVID FLiRT variants
SUMMARY: COVID-19 cases are rising in 39 states, including Mississippi, due to new “flirt” variants. Dr. Timothy Quinn, of Quinn Healthcare, explains that these variants, characterized by changes in their amino acid sequence, especially the spike protein, evade antibodies more effectively. This escape mechanism leads to an uptick in infections. Unvaccinated individuals or those not recently vaccinated are urged to get the updated vaccine, which offers better protection. High-risk individuals should limit exposure and consider mask-wearing. Recent COVID-19 vaccine updates replace old ones to ensure maximum protection, though efficacy data on the latest vaccines are still pending.
