Federal judge halts Mississippi law requiring age verification for websites
SUMMARY: A federal judge has blocked a Mississippi law requiring age verification for digital services, citing constitutional concerns over free speech. The law aimed to protect children from explicit content. Republican Gov. Tate Reeves signed the law, which passed without opposition. NetChoice, a tech industry group including Google and Meta, sued, arguing it infringes on privacy and free ideas exchange. The U.S. Supreme Court mandates strict scrutiny for such laws. Similar laws in Arkansas, California, and Ohio faced judicial blocks. Mississippi Attorney General Lynn Fitch defended the law as crucial for preventing harm to children but failed to persuade the court.
