Amateur ham radio operators prepare for emergencies with field day
SUMMARY: The Mississippi Coast Amateur Radio Association is prepared for emergencies when phone service is unavailable. On Saturday, members practiced setting up and communicating during Field Day, aiming to develop relationships for use during emergencies, like hurricanes. Ham radio is essential in such events; for instance, during Katrina, people struggled with cell phones, whereas ham radios offered reliable communication. Members contacted operators as far as Oregon. While crucial in emergencies, ham radio is also a fun hobby, allowing enthusiasts to communicate globally without phones, using radio frequencies.
