Wellness Wednesday: How to stay safe in cars during hot weather
SUMMARY: In a segment on WJTV's “Live at Noon,” Dr. Quinn addresses the critical issue of vehicular heatstroke, which is tragically common and often fatal for young children. Since 1998, over 960 children have died from heatstroke in cars, with an average of 37 deaths annually. The majority of these incidents involve parents or caregivers forgetting the child in the vehicle. Some children also gain access to unlocked cars and become trapped. Dr. Quinn emphasizes the importance of constant vigilance and suggests practical tips like leaving a shoe in the back seat to remind drivers of their child's presence. He also urges never to leave children or pets in cars, as temperatures can swiftly rise to dangerous levels.
