Tupelo prepares to crack down on panhandling, loitering
SUMMARY: The city of Tupelo, Mississippi, is addressing aggressive panhandling and loitering through a proposed public solicitation ordinance after numerous complaints from residents and business owners. Kelly Fowler from the Shoe and Boot Outlet noted an increase in homelessness, trespassing, and panhandling negatively affecting her business. The ordinance would ban loitering within 50 feet of intersections with heavy traffic and enable police intervention if businesses mark their properties against solicitation. Assistant City Attorney Stephen Reed emphasized the focus on public safety. Though tabled for a recent meeting, the city council is expected to vote on the ordinance soon.
