Beryl intensifies to earliest Cat 5 on record, excessive heat expected Tuesday
SUMMARY: Barrel, a Category 5 hurricane with 160 mph winds, is moving through the Caribbean, supported by warm waters (mid-80s) and minimal wind shear. The storm's structure is well-defined, leading to its rapid intensification. Historically, such strong hurricanes in early July are rare, the last being Hurricane Emily in mid-July 2005. Barrel is currently steered west by a high-pressure ridge but is expected to weaken due to increased wind shear in the western Caribbean. Potential paths include Jamaica and the Yucatan Peninsula, possibly entering the southwestern Gulf as a tropical storm. Locally, south Mississippi expects scattered storms and extreme heat.
