Hurricane hunters order new planes
SUMMARY: The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) is set to replace its aging WP-3 Orion hurricane hunter aircraft with new C-130J aircraft. These modernized planes will feature advanced avionics, digital displays, and enhanced radar systems, allowing for a comprehensive three-dimensional view of tropical systems. The upgrades support NOAA’s ongoing research efforts in hurricane monitoring. Adjustments will be made for the structural design differences between the P-3s and C-130s, including finding new technology to replace certain radar systems. NOAA has ordered two C-130Js, with an option for four more, aiming to improve hurricane operations and studies, particularly in the Pacific.
