SUMMARY: In recent years, the Gulf Coast has experienced a troubling trend of tropical storms rapidly intensifying just before landfall. This rapid intensification is notoriously difficult to forecast, but researchers at the University of Southern Mississippi aim to change that with the help of a device called The Infinity Float. Developed in partnership with the renewable energy company SE, this autonomous floating platform gathers ocean temperature data, which is crucial for predicting storm intensification. Unlike current devices that gather data infrequently, The Infinity Float provides continuous measurements every six hours. The data collected will support improved hurricane forecast models, with large-scale deployment planned for the 2025 hurricane season.

The hope is that additional observations of sea surface temperatures plugged into hurricane models could help improve the forecast for how strong storms may get
