Hercule’s Club or Devil’s Walking Stick, This Understory Tree is Rightfully Named
SUMMARY: The Devil's Walking Stick, also known as Hercules' Club, is an aptly named understory tree covered in thorns and spines to deter animals and humans. Its mature leaves are the largest in the eastern U.S., reaching up to 60 inches long and 30 inches wide with dozens of leaflets. These leaves attach directly to the trunk and drop off before winter, leaving a spiky, bare trunk. Unique features include clasping petioles, distinct leaf scars, and persistent thorns. The tree produces clusters of white to cream flowers and purple berries, attracting pollinators and birds. Despite its prickliness, it's a valuable addition to landscapes for supporting wildlife.

Recipes to Get You Ready for July 4th
SUMMARY: As summer reaches its midpoint, the Fourth of July is a time to celebrate with flags, remember our heritage, and enjoy food with loved ones. Initially, I considered writing about flag displays or the historic July 2, 1776, independence declaration. Instead, I focused on sharing food tips, including a burger tip with chopped onions and peppers from Bess Robbins. For your Independence Day meal, I recommend a Sour Cream Flag Cake and a Watermelon Feta Flag Salad, both featuring patriotic colors. The cake includes layers of strawberries and blueberries, while the salad combines arugula, watermelon, and feta, dressed with a lemony vinaigrette. Bon Appetit!
