SUMMARY: Today marks the 80th anniversary of D-Day, one of World War II's pivotal battles, where tens of thousands of U.S. and Allied troops stormed Normandy's beaches to combat German forces. Key to this success were the Higgins Boats, designed and built in New Orleans by industrialist Andrew Higgins. Notably, boat builders from the Mississippi Gulf Coast, including master boat builder Joe Moran, contributed significantly. Mr. Higgins even sought Moran to help improve the boat designs for versatility in rough seas and shallow waters. Mississippi leaders are commemorating the sacrifices and contributions of those from the region who played critical roles in this historic operation.

Thursday marks the 80th anniversary of one of the most defining battles of World War II.
