Possible explosive device revealed to be package of trash at Alcorn County church

Tropical Storm Barrel, a 60 mph windstorm, is expected to intensify in the Western Gulf of Mexico, possibly becoming a Category 1 hurricane. Expect patchy fog and oppressive humidity overnight.

SUMMARY: A Hattiesburg man, Tobias Smith, 27, is in custody for a bomb threat sent via text to a Smith County business, leading to the evacuation of employees at Georgia Pacific Plywood near Taylorville. The Highway Patrol used bomb dogs to search the site before employees could return. Smith faces one count of terrorist threats and is currently held at Smith County Jail, awaiting his bond hearing.

SUMMARY: A house fire occurred near Baxterville in Lamar County amidst thunderstorms in the Pine Belt area. Officials do not suspect foul play and believe a lightning strike may have caused the fire.
