Gulf of Mexico Alliance to remove 20 derelict vessels from Mississippi waters
SUMMARY: More than a dozen derelict vessels across the Mississippi Gulf Coast are set to be removed through a partnership among a nonprofit, a local business, and a state agency. The Gulf of Mexico Alliance, funded by a NOAA grant, will oversee the initiative to remove abandoned boats, which pose navigation and environmental hazards. Gulf Stream Marine will handle the removal, gutting, and sinking of the vessels to create artificial reefs, a process known as reefing, with assistance from the Mississippi Department of Marine Resources. This collaborative effort aims to enhance the Gulf's ecosystem and promote a sustainable future. Over the next four years, around 20 abandoned ships will be removed from the region.
Two years ago, one boat sank in a Biloxi harbor and has been abandoned ever since. The vessel will soon have new life.
