Pay raise for Laurel police, firemen passes 1st go-round
SUMMARY: The Laurel City Council approved a 15.8% pay raise for the Police and Fire Departments to better align with salaries from other departments in the state. Starting pay for police officers will rise from $44,000 to $51,000, while starting pay for firefighters will increase from around $36,000 to more than $42,000. The city is losing personnel due to low pay and hopes the increase will aid recruitment. To fund the $900,000 needed for the raises, property taxes will be raised by 4.2%, costing homeowners approximately $47 more annually. The new pay rates will take effect on October 1st.
