As major hurricanes threaten the northern Gulf Coast, a critical emergency plan called contraflow is implemented to ease evacuation. When enacted, it reverses southbound lanes on major highways, expediting northbound evacuation. This plan, requiring a mandatory evacuation order and sufficient lead time, involves logistical preparations and traffic control by MDOT, recently bolstered by a $4.8 million grant. Inland flooding from tropical cyclones poses a severe threat, often overlooked. Awareness and preparation for both before and after storms are crucial, including knowing flood-prone areas and evacuation procedures.
